The faces are the most time comsuming and intensive part of the cake topper sculpture. It usually takes about 8 hours to complete one head. The heads have a foil core wrapped around a piece of wire that will later be inserted into the torso. The clay is then built up with careful reference to the photos provided to create a good likeness. The eyeballs and teeth are baked ahead of time and inserted during the early stages of sculpting. Rubber tipped tools, knitting needles, and brushes are the primary tools. Fingers tend to impart grease to the surface discoloring it no matter how many times you wash your hands so I have developed a hands off approach to the faces.
